It's become more popular to opt for non-traditional gemstones over classic diamonds when buying an engagement ring, so it's not hard to see why Herkimer diamonds can be a great fit for those with modern aesthetics. How? Well, Herkimers aren't actually diamonds but are double-terminated quartz crystals. And while these gemstones share some of the same qualities as their popular namesake (the diamond), they do encompass a few differences and are truly unique in their own way.
At first glance, these stones have a transparent and clear look to them that makes them appear similar to diamonds. However, upon closer inspection, you can see their uncut and unpolished appearance that provides a natural and earthy feel, which leans into their popular look. In fact, this stone has even gotten some press before, as Meghan Markle was spotted wearing Herkimer diamonds in 2018, and Kanye West once gifted one to Kim Kardashian.
Interested in learning more? To find out everything there is to know about this unique gemstone, we spoke with a jeweler to help break down its one-of-a-kind details. Ahead, read on to find out more about the Herkimer diamond and why it might be the perfect fit for an engagement ring.
Aditi Daga is the CEO and co-founder of Angara Jewelry and has 30 years of experience in the jewelry industry.
Herkimer diamonds are double-terminated quartz crystals, meaning they have two naturally occurring faces on either end, feature two side points, and have about 18 faces in total. They originated from Herkimer County, New York, which is where they got their name.
Herkimer diamonds have plenty of positive qualities that make them an excellent choice for everyday wear. "These gems have a diamond-like look, a high degree of brightness, and excellent durability, ranking a 7.5 in hardness," says Aditi Daga, CEO and co-founder of Angara Jewelry. Thus, given their durability, they're a wonderful option to consider when shopping for an engagement ring.
Another pro? Daga notes that these crystals are a cost-friendly choice, allowing couples to get the look of a diamond at an affordable price. What's more, their many facets and excellent clarity give them a natural sparkle without ever being treated, and they each have their own unique features. They're also sourced above the ground, meaning that they're an ethical and sustainable alternative. Lastly, for those looking for a stone that feels more spiritual, Herkimer diamonds are sometimes called "The Stone of Attunement" and are meant to promote healing, ease, love, and positive energy.
That said, there are some downsides to these gemstones. While they are pretty durable, they are not as strong as a diamond and might be prone to scratches. Additionally, there's a reason why they're more cost-friendly, as their value won't appreciate over time. In fact, Daga says, "A Herkimer diamond's value actually depreciates with the passage of time in comparison to natural diamonds and colored gemstones. Hence, they should never be considered an investment."
When purchasing a Herkimer diamond, you want to consider many of the same things you would look for in an actual diamond. For instance, be sure to pay attention to the clarity. Most Herkimer diamonds are transparent and quite clear, while others can contain impurities and flaws like air bubbles or tiny black carbon deposits. So if you're buying a Herkimer that is expensive and high-quality, it should be very clear without those imperfections.
You should also pay attention to the color of the stone, as they can range from transparent to smoky. If you want something with more sparkle and brilliance, look for a higher-quality option that's very transparent, especially when viewed in natural light.

Caring for a Herkimer diamond is like caring for any other gemstone. "Simply cleaning them with warm soapy water (mild soap) and a soft-bristled toothbrush will keep them sparkling," Daga says.
